I was going to call this post: "She tried to go antiquing and ended up drinking beer instead." That felt a bit cumbersome, although it does somewhat accurately describe what happened.
Since moving to Kincardine almost a year ago, I have been on the hunt for the best of the west! The west coast of Ontario that is. Having been to the west coast of Canada many times, I do find this a bit funny.
I digress. So far I have found some of my favourite nachos (stay tuned), and some of my favourite shops (also coming), but this past weekend I was on the hunt for some antiques.
So, I did what I normally do and headed into the Kincardine Strong group on Facebook to consult our very helpful community. There were many great suggestions but one of them stood out. There is a market in Neustadt and right across the street is a brewery. Perfect! Except I found upon arrival that the market is closed, although there is a very cute antique store with very reasonable prices on the other side of the street.
I was hungry and thirsty anyway, so beer and food it would be. As you walk into the Neustadt Brewery you immediately feel the history of the place. I regret not taking the beer tour and can't wait to go back!
For a snowy Saturday, it was busy, but apparently not as busy as it normally is. Still the service was great and the woman who served us was one of the kindest people. Her energy exuded a genuine friendliness that can be rare to find. There are people in life who make your day better just by having run into them, she was one of those people.
But it wasn't only the history and the people who made my little weekend adventure amazing. It was also the beer and the food. First of all, if you like a good pretzel, look no further. I tried the one with mustard and salt. It was warmed to perfection. Delicious!
While, I am by no means a very knowledgeable beer drinker, (I tend to like the ones with less rather than more flavour), I really enjoyed Gramma's Jam and the Raspberry Lager. I even brought a few home to enjoy later.
If you are planning a road trip to the west coast of Ontario, I highly recommend adding Neustadt Brewery to your itinerary. It is one of those little gems you find that makes you happy. You won't regret it. What you might regret is not taking the tour though, so you should probably do that too!
