Make Me Feel Something

Andreah Barker

In the past four years there have been three shows that have made me feel something. They made me care about the characters. Thinking on it as I write, I guess there were a few more than three actually. But to keep this post on the shorter side I'll start it by saying that Brooklyn Nine-nine and The Office get honourable mentions for great characters and stories that pulled me in.

There were three shows though, that I wish could've continued on forever, although I guess I'm glad they didn't. I think it's always good to end on a high and leave them wanting more.

My top three shows for amazing writing are:

  1. Ted Lasso - I loved all of the characters. They were all wonderfully flawed. Okay, there was one character I didn't like, but we don't need to talk about him. Anway the whole show was just so well done. I think my cheeks were damp through the entirety of the last two episodes.

  2. Schitt's Creek - Eagle Eye and I had a failed attempt at this one to start. We really just didn't like the people and stopped after a couple of episodes. But we kept hearing good things and so we gave it another go. I'm so glad we did! Again, I fell in love with all of the characters but there is a special place in my heart for David. He is simply the best!

  3. Money Heist (or La casa de papel) - If you've seen it and fell in love with the people too, you know the scene. It's Delicate.

In the end they all tell great stories, but it is the people you fall in love with. I don't need to tell you why, you just know. As a writer I'm not sure I have that talent yet. It's not as easy as it seems and that's why so many shows fail.

I'm working towards telling one of those epic, unforgettable stories where the characters change your life forever. They not only make you feel something, but they make you better as a person. They make you look at the world differently. They ultimately inspire you to become one of those people to someone else.

Are there any books, shows, theatre productions, or movies that have made you feel something? Send me your list to hello@sadietellsstories and I'll share some of the top choices in a future post.
